Who is Jagdeep Singh?
Jagdeep Singh is 51 years old today, his life is very inspiring. He has been doing dairy farming for the last 24 years. He decided to join the Punjab Police after completing his education. Jagdeep served there for about 10 years. During this time, his younger brother and other family members took care of the farming work.
This family support was very important for him, as it allowed him to move forward in his career. Jagdeep Singh’s hard work and family support are the keys to his success. His life inspires us how to make our dreams come true, no matter how many challenges are in the way.
Start of Dairy Farming
When his younger brother moved to Delhi for higher education, Jagdeep Singh left his job in 2001 and started cultivating mushrooms and vegetables. However, he did not get promising profits in this work, due to which he turned to dairy farming. He first bought a buffalo, and by 2004 the number of animals in dairy farming increased to 10-15.
In 2004, Jagdeep Singh further strengthened his business by joining the Nestle company. Initially, he used to carry milk on a bicycle and then resorted to a motorcycle. The distance was about 4 kilometers, but his hard work made him successful. In 2006, he gave a commercial shape to his dairy farm by buying 36 cows. At that time his farm started producing 900 liters of milk per day.
In 2011, he further expanded his farm by taking a bank loan of 2.5 crores. After this investment, the number of his cows increased to 350, and his daily milk production reached 3600 liters. It was the result of his hard work and dedication, which gave him an important place in the field of dairy farming.
Lumpy disease crisis
Jagdeep Singh lost 270 animals due to lumpy disease, bringing his business to the brink of collapse. It was a very difficult time, but he did not give up. Despite the crisis, he continued his struggle and decided to start again.
Today, he has 150 animals, including cows, buffaloes, heifers and calves. His hard work and dedication helped him overcome this difficulty. Recently, he has purchased 30 more animals from Haryana, which has brought innovation and growth to his business. Jagdeep Singh’s story is truly an inspiration on how to move forward even in the face of difficulties.
Management of the farm
Currently, his dairy farm spread over 4 acres produces 600 liters of milk daily. To ensure this production, the animals are fed a special diet, which includes maize and other nutrients. It is ensured that all the essential elements are present in their diet so that they remain healthy and capable of producing.
Jagdeep Singh takes special care of the health of his animals. All the animals are vaccinated twice a year so that they remain safe from diseases. Special housing has been arranged for the animals in the farm, where fans and coolers are provided during the summer season. In the rainy season, they are kept safe in sheds so that they can avoid the rigors of the weather. Thus, the management of his farm not only increases milk production but also ensures the well-being of the animals.
Income and honours
Currently, Jagdeep Singh’s dairy farm generates an annual income of Rs 21-30 lakh, which includes 25-30% net profit. This is the result of his hard work and proper management. Along with this, he has received a subsidy of Rs 12 lakh from the government for a biogas plant. Apart from this, he has also received subsidy on milk vending machine, silage machine and animal insurance, which has further strengthened his business.Â
Jagdeep Singh has received many honors for his work. In 2012, he was awarded the Chief Minister’s Award for Integrated Farming from Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). In 2013, he received the Chief Minister’s Award for Dairy Farming from GADVASU.
However, In 2014, he received the Best Farmer Award with Rs 51,000 from Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. Recently, in 2021, he received the Best Dairy Farmer Award from Union Minister Parshottam Rupala at Solan University. All these awards are recognition of his work and reflect the society’s recognition towards him.
Future plans and suggestions
Jagdeep Singh aims to expand his farm and create more employment opportunities through it. He is also planning to market his milk products himself, so that he can connect directly with consumers and price his products better. For new farmers, he always advises to start small. Starting with 5 animals is a good option, and he recommends adding animals like buffalo as well. This diversity can provide stability to their business.
Along with this, he warns new farmers to beware of fraud in the name of indigenous breeds. Many times fake products can be encountered in the market, so always advises to buy from reliable sources. His experience can prove to be an important guide for new farmers.
