Mahogany Farming: Know how to do Mahogany farming, what are the things that need to be taken care of?

Mahogany trees are considered very valuable, because every part of it, such as leaves, flowers, seeds, skins and wood, is in demand and gets a good price. Mahogany cultivation gives long lasting profits to the farmers.

Mahogany cultivation is like a long time investment. It takes four to five years for its plants to become a tree and become a wonderful ‘earning son’ of the farmer. It takes about 6 years for mahogany plants to attain the form of a mature tree. Till maturity, the mahogany plants do not cause any financial crunch for the farmers, but keep on supplying proper amount of ‘nitrogen’, the most precious source of natural fertilizer for the pulse plants.

What type of climate and land is suitable for cultivation of mahogany? 

The height of a mahogany tree can range from 40 to 200 feet. But the real average height in India is around 60 feet. Its roots do not go very deep. That is why consider it a bit delicate and hesitate to apply it in areas with high winds. Mahogany can be planted in any fertile land except waterlogged land.

Mahogany can be grown in any climate except hilly and heavy rainfall areas. Normal temperature is right for the germination and development of their seeds. In the early years, mahogany plants have to be protected from extreme heat and cold. But the developed trees continue to grow well in the temperature of 15 degree celsius in winter and 35 degree celsius in summer.

Mahogany cultivation process  

June-July is the best time for transplanting mahogany plants. After this, the monsoon season becomes a favourable environment for the growth of plants. For this level the field after deep plowing. Then plant trees at a distance of three to four meters by making rows of pits two feet deep at three feet width. Fill the pits with soil mixed with organic and chemical fertilizers and apply light irrigation.

Water the plants on 5 to 7 days in summer and 10 to 15 days in winter. The water requirement of growing plants decreases. 5 to 6 irrigations in a year is sufficient for developed trees. Keep weeding and hoeing as needed.

How much does mahogany cultivation cost? 

1200 to 1500 mahogany trees can be grown in one acre. The cost of its plant ranges from Rs 25-30 to Rs 100-200. Its cost depends on the age of the plant going to be used for transplanting and how it has developed. Apart from this, if we look at adding fertilizers, wages and other expenses, then the average cost per acre ranges from 1.5 to 2.5 lakh rupees.
