Thousands of farmers in Madhya Pradesh have called off their protest after the state government announced a series of measures to address concerns over moong procurement. The decision followed discussions between farmer representatives and government officials after two days of demonstrations in Bhopal.
The protest centred on the procurement of summer moong at the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Farmer organisations had demanded that the government purchase the entire eligible crop and simplify the procurement process. The demonstrations affected traffic in several parts of Bhopal as farmers marched towards the Chief Minister’s residence.
Following the negotiations, the Madhya Pradesh government agreed to increase procurement from 25% to 60% of the eligible moong crop for each registered farmer. Officials also extended the slot booking deadline for procurement and increased the procurement period to give farmers more time to sell their produce.
Another major decision was the suspension of the e-token system for fertiliser distribution until further review. Farmer groups had argued that the existing system was creating difficulties in accessing fertilisers during the cropping season.
The government said these decisions were taken to ensure that a larger number of farmers benefit from procurement while improving the efficiency of agricultural services.
Why Farmers Protested
This year’s summer moong harvest has been higher than expected in several districts, including Harda, Sehore and Narmadapuram. Farmers feared that limited government procurement would force them to sell a large share of their produce below the MSP in private markets.
Farmer organisations also objected to procurement limits and sought easier access to fertilisers during the ongoing agricultural season. They maintained that timely procurement is essential to protect farm incomes and support the next cropping cycle.
To support farmers, the state government has extended the procurement booking period until August 10, while the procurement process itself will continue until August 20. Officials believe the extension will reduce pressure on procurement centres and allow more farmers to complete registrations.
Farmer representatives have welcomed the immediate relief measures, although some organisations continue to seek wider procurement coverage in future seasons. They said the government’s latest decisions have addressed the most urgent concerns that led to the protest.
Focus Remains on Supporting Farmers
The resolution of the protest highlights the importance of timely procurement during the Kharif marketing season. Procurement policies directly influence farmer incomes, particularly when production is high and market prices come under pressure.
Agricultural experts say efficient procurement systems, transparent registration and timely payments remain essential for protecting farmers’ interests. As procurement operations continue across Madhya Pradesh, both the government and farmer organisations are expected to monitor implementation of the announced measures to ensure eligible cultivators receive the promised benefits.
