Pramila Jena: a successful entrepreneur and master trainer in mushroom production

Mushroom production is one such crop, which can be cultivated at a low cost and in less space. Farmers of many states are earning good income by cultivating mushrooms. The demand of the mushrooms is increasing day by day because it is considered very nutritious for health. Cultivation of mushrooms has become a profitable deal for farmers. Nowadays, a lot of farmers are practicing mushroom cultivation, because income is many times more than traditional farming.

Smt Pramila Jena, a matriculate farmer of village Barapada, jajpur has become a successful entrepreneur. She earned an additional income by cultivating mushrooms.

KVK helped her to start mushroom cultivation for additional income

Agriculture is the lifeline of the district Jajpur. The total cultivated area of the district jajpur is 151720 hectares(ha), out of which 1,25,000 ha is paddy area. Smt Pramila Jena has 2 acres of land in jajpur.

Before mushroom cultivation, She was growing paddy and groundnut in traditional methods, but she could hardly meet the needs of her family. She was looking for other better options and a good source of income. Her search was completed when Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) found her. KVK identified her needs and motivated her to take up mushroom cultivation with an objective of higher production of mushroom for additional income. KVK scientists motivated her to start the mushroom cultivation in her farm. In 2011, she started mushroom cultivation with only 5 to 6 numbers of beds in her farm.

On the basis of information given in the training, she used quality spawn for mushroom cultivation.  Apart from training, KVK also helped her by providing vocational training, farmer and scientist interaction programs. Monitoring and diagnostic visits are also done by KVK scientists.

Earned an annual profit of Rs. 2,70,000 by mushroom cultivation

In 2014, her total cost in cultivating mushrooms was Rs 1,80,000 and her total income was Rs. 4,50,000, in this way her annual profit was Rs. 2,70,000. She earned a lot of income by cultivating mushrooms in Jajpur. Not only she became a successful entrepreneur but also she has become a role model to other women in her village as well as in other villages. She became a master trainer of women farmers in Barchana block, Jajpur. She has inspired and motivated many women in her block to do mushroom cultivation. Eight of her family members are also engaged in her farm. Smt Pramila jena also became a president of Badachana “Rural Aradhya Federation”

She has motivated and encouraged a lot of farm women for entrepreneurial activities related to mushroom

Smt Pramila jena motivated 25 number of women Self Help Groups of Badachana and Dharmasala block. She mobilized them for taking up entrepreneurship activities on mushrooms. She encouraged them for entrepreneurial activities related to mushrooms. A farmers fair cum farmer scientist interaction program held in December 2014. She was felicitated in that program for her significant contribution in areas of mushroom production throughout the year. Mushroom cultivation has become a profitable enterprise of rural women.
