The increasing impact of new technologies in agriculture in India’s economy (Promotion of New Technologies in Agriculture) is an important indication. Which tells that agriculture is changing with changing times. Modern technologies are being incorporated in traditional agricultural practices. Due to which productivity is increasing and farmers are on the path of becoming empowered.
In this direction, the government has taken many schemes (Government Schemes) and initiatives which are making the agricultural sector technically strong. About this, Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Ram Nath Thakur gave information in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha on 4 April 2025.
Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana and SMAM
One of the major schemes of the government is the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY), under which the Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanization (SMAM) is being implemented through the states. The objective of this scheme is to provide financial assistance to farmers for the purchase of modern agricultural machinery and equipment. This assistance is provided for individual ownership as well as collective use.
Under this scheme, Custom Hiring Centers (CHC) and Village Level Agricultural Machinery Banks (FMB) are established so that small and marginal farmers can also avail modern equipment on rent. With this, agricultural work can be done in a more efficient and timely manner.
Use of drone technology and ‘Namo Drone Didi’ scheme
Drone technology has brought a revolutionary change in agriculture. Farmers can now spray pesticides and fertilizers with precision with the help of drones, thereby reducing costs and increasing productivity.
Under the SMAM scheme, farmers are given financial assistance for demonstration of drones in the fields, purchase of drones for personal use and providing drone-based services. Also, the government has launched the ‘Namo Drone Didi’ scheme, under which 15,000 drones will be provided to women self-help groups (SHGs) from 2023-24 to 2025-26.
The scheme aims to empower women and give them new livelihood opportunities through agriculture-related services. So far, 1094 drones have been distributed to the ‘Drone Didi’ of SHGs, out of which 500 drones are under the ‘Namo Drone Didi’ scheme. The remaining 14,500 drones are targeted to be delivered by 2025-26.
Digital Agriculture Mission and AgriStack
In September 2024, the government has approved the Digital Agriculture Mission with an outlay of Rs 2817 crore. It aims to develop a strong digital agriculture ecosystem in the country. The major projects under the mission include:
1. Agristack – a comprehensive digital database that integrates farmer and crop information.
2. Agricultural Decision Support System
3. Soil Fertility Profile Map
4. Various IT-based government initiatives
Through these initiatives, accurate, timely and scientific information will be made available to farmers so that they can improve their decisions.
PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana and Chatbot ‘Kisan E-Mitra’
An AI powered chatbot ‘Kisan E-Mitra’ has also been developed to answer questions related to PM Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, which provides digital assistance to farmers.
