Radish is a vegetable with evergreen root, which is used in making vegetables, salads and pickles. Although radish can be grown in all seasons, radish grown in hot weather become tough and bitter in taste, while radish found in cold weather are delicious to eat. Radish farming is done in the plains during the Rabi season. Radish is a high yielding vegetable in less time. Therefore, farmers can increase their profits by its production. To earn more from radish cultivation, it is important to know about its best varieties.

Improved varieties of radish 

Japanese White – This species of radish is exotic and is grown more in mountainous areas. Its specialty is that this variety becomes ready only after two months of sowing. The roots of this variety of radish are completely white. The length of the roots is about 1 foot. This radish has a sweet taste and has an average production capacity of 25 to 30 tonnes per hectare.

Pusa Desi – This variety is cultivated in the Rabi season. The lower part of the roots of their plants is sharp. The length of its roots is also up to one foot. The roots of the plants are white and slightly thick. Its taste is bitter. Therefore, it is used more in making pickles and vegetables. The crop is ready 40-45 days after sowing and the average production per hectare is 30 tonnes.

Pusa Chetki – Roots of this variety are completely white and soft. It is less pungent than other varieties of summer radish. Its length is up to 15-20 cm. Sowing of this variety is done between April to August and the average yield potential is 250 q/ha.

Pusa Reshmi – The roots of this variety of radish plants are up to one foot long. Its colour is white and slightly pungent in taste. Its leaves have a light thorn-like appearance and the average production per hectare is between 31 to 35 tonnes. The crop is ready for harvesting about 55-60 days after sowing.

Kashi Hans – This variety of radish is grown in winter season. The crop of this variety becomes ready only after 45-60 days of sowing. The roots of its plants are pointed and the taste is mildly sweet. The average production of this variety of plant per hectare is 40-45 tons.

Kashi Lohit (VRRAD-131-2) – Its roots are of attractive red colour. This variety is considered good for salads. This variety has 80 to 100 percent more anti-oxidant properties than white radish. It is rich in Vitamin C. It contains phytochemicals such as anthocyanins and phenolics. The right time for sowing is between mid-September to mid-December. It has a yield potential of 40-45 tonnes per hectare.

Weather and soil for radish cultivation 

Cold weather is necessary for good and quality crop of radish. Plants grow rapidly at 20-25 °C. Loamy soil is considered suitable for good crop. Clay soil is not good for radish cultivation. It is sown in rows. There should be a distance of 30 to 45 cm between two rows. Since its crop is ready early, so weeding should also be done early. Although nowadays radish is grown throughout the year, but its commercial cultivation is mostly done during the Rabi season.
