Vinita Chauhan of Sisana village in Baghpat district started her journey of organic gardening on her 5-acre land. Along with specialising in guava and lemon gardening, Vinita has also added dozens of other plants like apple, peach, sweet lime, grapes, mango, jackfruit, litchi, fig, Malabar neem and mahogany to her orchard. Vinita’s gardening base is completely organic.
Use of organic techniques
Vinita has adopted several measures to keep her orchard completely organic, ensuring improved crop quality and environmental protection. She explains:
“Organic farming is more hard work, but the results are long-lasting.”
Key organic measures:
Vermi Compost: To increase soil fertility and nutrition.
Neem Oil and Neem Cake: As natural pesticides and disease controllers.
Sea-weed and organic fungicides: To maintain plant health and productivity.
Pheromone traps: To control the population of harmful insects.
Additionally, Vinita has also given priority to mixed cropping. Products like pulses, turmeric, and vegetables are grown in her garden, which become a source of additional income along with the main crop.
“Organic practices not only reduced my costs but also made my garden an example,” she says.
Achievements and Honours
Vinita’s excellent organic gardening work has been appreciated at various forums:
1. Got first place at the district level in guava production on Kisan Diwas.
2. Honoured for excellent work on Uttar Pradesh Foundation Day.
3. Honoured by Krishi Vigyan Khekra in Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.
Benefits of government assistance
Vinita received subsidy from the Horticulture Department, which helped in setting up the orchard and adopting techniques like drip irrigation. Subsidy on vegetable seeds also played a helpful role in reducing the production cost.
In addition, she also availed subsidy on products like neem khali and organic fungicide for organic crop production.
These government schemes not only made her farming technologically advanced but also ensured the quality of the produce.
“The government support reduced my cost and gave me the courage to adopt modern techniques,” says Vinita.
Her success is inspiring other farmers to take advantage of government schemes.
Success in the market
Vinita sells her produce through the local market and the horticulture department. She believes that the demand for organic produce is constantly increasing. Vinita says:
“Organic fruits and vegetables are not just good for health but also fetch good prices in the market.”
She has also registered her produce on online platforms, thereby extending her reach across the country.
In addition, Vinita has inspired other farmers to adopt organic farming by sharing her success stories. Their aim is that more and more farmers should adopt organic farming and improve their lives.
Future plans
Vineeta is planning to expand the scope of her gardening in the coming time. Their aim is to deliver organic products across the country through online platforms. Also, they want to organize training programs to teach and inspire other farmers about organic farming.
Vineeta Chauhan’s journey proves that organic gardening is not only helpful in protecting the environment, but it also empowers farmers economically. Her hard work and dedication is not only an inspiration, but it also shows that an effort started at a small level can bring big changes.
