The growing cost of diesel, labour shortages and rising machinery prices have made mechanisation difficult for many small farmers. Buying a tractor or specialised machine is often beyond their budget, especially when it is needed for only a few days each season. The launch of affordable battery-powered farm equipment is now creating a new agribusiness opportunity centred on equipment rental rather than ownership.
In July 2026, Bengaluru-based KisanKraft launched two battery-powered machines—the E-Inter-cultivator and the E-Self Propelled Reaper—designed specifically for small and medium farmers. The company says field trials showed operating costs falling from around ₹170 per hour to nearly ₹10 per hour, making electric mechanisation far more affordable than petrol-powered equipment.
Rental Business Has Greater Potential Than Machine Sales
For most rural entrepreneurs, purchasing one or two electric machines and renting them to nearby farmers may be more profitable than selling agricultural inputs.
Instead of investing several lakhs in large machinery, entrepreneurs can start with compact electric equipment that performs weeding and harvesting operations. Since these machines require less maintenance and no fuel, operating expenses remain low while demand continues during peak farming seasons.
The rental model also allows small farmers to access modern machinery without making large investments. Farmers pay only for the hours they use the equipment, reducing production costs while improving the timely completion of field operations.
Electric machines eliminate many recurring expenses associated with petrol engines.
There is no spending on petrol, engine oil, spark plugs or carburettor servicing. The machines also operate with less vibration and noise, making them easier to use during long working hours. Lower maintenance requirements help entrepreneurs recover their investment more quickly than conventional equipment.
Manufacturers also expect future versions to include IoT-based monitoring that will help rental operators track battery health, machine location and maintenance schedules through mobile applications.
FPOs and Rural Youth Can Build Local Enterprises
Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), self-help groups and rural youth can use these machines to establish village-level custom hiring centres.
Instead of every farmer buying equipment individually, a community-based rental service can improve machinery utilisation throughout the year. This model reduces capital costs for farmers while generating regular income for entrepreneurs who manage the equipment fleet.
The business can later expand by adding electric sprayers, tillers, seeders and other battery-powered machines as they become commercially available.
Small and marginal farmers account for nearly 86% of India’s farm holdings, making affordable mechanisation one of the country’s biggest agricultural challenges.
Battery-powered farm equipment offers an opportunity to build profitable rural businesses while helping farmers reduce cultivation costs. States such as Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu could particularly benefit because of their high demand for custom hiring services during sowing, weeding and harvesting seasons.
Government support through Custom Hiring Centres (CHCs), Agricultural Infrastructure Fund, state agriculture departments and FPOs could further accelerate adoption by making electric machinery available on a rental basis rather than requiring individual ownership.
A Business Opportunity Beyond Farming
Electric farm equipment is not only changing how fields are cultivated but also creating new business models in rural India.
As battery technology improves and more electric agricultural machines enter the market, entrepreneurs who establish local rental services early could benefit from growing demand. The combination of low operating costs, increasing labour shortages and government support for mechanisation makes equipment rental one of the most promising agribusiness opportunities emerging in 2026.
