Farmers often need to visit different websites or government offices to find information about subsidies, insurance, income support and other agricultural programmes. The government has now launched an upgraded Agri Welfare Portal to bring several farmer services together on one digital platform.
The portal was launched on October 19 by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. It provides access to major schemes and services including PM-KISAN, AgriStack and the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana. The government says farmers can use the platform through mobile phones without visiting government offices.
The portal also aims to provide farmers with information on weather, scientific farming practices, seed and fertiliser availability and market prices. This could help farmers make decisions about cultivation, inputs and marketing from a single platform.
Designed for farmers using basic phones
The government says the portal has been designed for rural users, including farmers with limited internet connectivity. It is intended to work on basic smartphones and provide information through a simpler interface. Training will also be organised through Krishi Vigyan Kendras to help farmers use digital services.
This can matter for small and marginal farmers who may find it difficult to navigate several government websites. A single platform can make it easier to check eligibility, submit applications and track assistance without depending completely on intermediaries.
The portal also supports accessibility features for people with disabilities. The government says it includes screen-reader support and simpler navigation so that more farmers can access agricultural services digitally.
PM-KISAN is among the major services available through the portal. The scheme provides ₹6,000 a year to eligible landholding farmer families in three equal instalments through direct bank transfers.
The government approved continuation of PM-KISAN from 2026-27 to 2030-31 with a financial outlay of ₹3.15 lakh crore. More than ₹4.47 lakh crore had been transferred through 23 instalments, according to government data.
Farmers need land records, Aadhaar-linked bank accounts and completed e-KYC to receive PM-KISAN benefits. Bringing scheme information together on the new portal could make it easier for farmers to identify requirements before applying or checking their payment status.
Information can help farmers make decisions
Agricultural information is useful only when farmers can access it at the right time. Weather forecasts can influence irrigation and spraying decisions, while market prices can help farmers decide when and where to sell produce.
The portal will also provide information on seeds and fertilisers. This can help farmers compare available options and avoid relying only on informal sources for information about agricultural inputs.
Digital information can also support climate-resilient farming. Farmers facing irregular rainfall, heat or changing crop conditions can use weather information alongside advice from agriculture departments and KVKs before making decisions about sowing, irrigation or crop protection.
The new portal comes as the government expands digital services across agriculture. Farmer IDs, digital land records, crop insurance and other services are increasingly being linked through digital systems.
The government’s Khet Bachao Abhiyan-Rabi 2026, launched on October 22, also aims to help farmers access Farmer IDs, crop insurance and Kisan Credit Card services while promoting soil testing, balanced fertiliser use and climate-resilient farming.
For farmers, the usefulness of the portal will depend on how easily they can access and understand the information. Local-language support, reliable internet access and training through KVKs will remain important for ensuring that digital services reach farmers beyond major towns.
The new portal brings several agricultural services into one place. If farmers can use it easily, it could reduce repeated visits to offices and make information about government support, weather, markets and farming practices easier to access.
