ICAR Demonstrates Drone-Based Precision Spraying for Cotton Farmers

0

Agricultural drones are becoming an important part of modern farming as labour shortages and rising input costs push farmers towards mechanisation. Scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) have demonstrated drone-based precision spraying in cotton fields to help farmers apply crop protection chemicals more efficiently while reducing labour requirements.

Researchers say drones can spray crops quickly, cover difficult areas and ensure uniform application of pesticides and nutrients. The technology is expected to support farmers during peak crop protection periods when labour is often scarce.

Traditional pesticide spraying is time-consuming and requires significant manual labour. Weather conditions and delayed spraying can also reduce the effectiveness of crop protection measures.

Drone-based spraying allows farmers to treat fields within a short time while maintaining uniform coverage. The equipment follows pre-planned flight paths and applies chemicals at the recommended dosage, reducing overlap and minimising wastage.

Scientists say precise application improves crop protection while reducing unnecessary use of pesticides.

Lower Labour Requirement

Many farming regions face labour shortages during critical agricultural operations. Drones reduce dependence on manual spraying and help farmers complete work on time.

The technology is particularly useful for crops such as cotton, where repeated spraying is required during the growing season. Farmers can also avoid direct exposure to pesticides because spraying is carried out remotely.

Researchers believe this improves both worker safety and operational efficiency.

Precision spraying helps reduce the quantity of pesticides and water required for crop protection.

Because drones deliver chemicals only where they are needed, farmers can lower input costs while reducing the environmental impact of excessive pesticide use. Accurate application also decreases chemical runoff and helps maintain healthier field conditions.

Agricultural experts say precision technologies will become increasingly important as farmers seek to improve productivity while conserving natural resources.

Government Support for Drone Adoption

The Government of India has introduced several initiatives to encourage the use of drones in agriculture. Financial assistance and training programmes are helping farmers, custom hiring centres and farmer producer organisations adopt the technology.

Research institutions are also conducting demonstrations to familiarise farmers with drone operations and explain their economic benefits under different cropping systems.

Drones are changing the way crop protection operations are carried out in Indian agriculture. Faster spraying, lower labour requirements and better input efficiency make them an attractive option for progressive farmers.

Scientists believe drone technology will become an integral part of precision farming as costs decline and awareness increases. Combined with digital agriculture and scientific crop management, drone-based spraying can help improve productivity while making farming safer, faster and more sustainable.
