ICAR Introduces AI-Powered Smart Seeder for Precision Farming

0

Scientists at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) are promoting advanced farm machinery that combines automation with precision agriculture to improve sowing efficiency. Among the latest innovations is an AI-enabled smart seeder designed to place seeds at the correct depth and spacing while reducing seed wastage and improving crop establishment.

As labour shortages and rising cultivation costs continue to affect Indian agriculture, researchers believe intelligent machinery will play an important role in increasing productivity and reducing production expenses.

Uniform seed placement is one of the most important factors influencing crop performance. Incorrect seed depth or uneven spacing often results in poor germination and lower yields.

The smart seeder uses sensors and intelligent control systems to maintain accurate seed placement according to crop requirements. This helps achieve uniform plant populations, improves nutrient utilisation and supports better crop growth throughout the season.

Researchers say precise sowing can also reduce the amount of seed required, lowering cultivation costs for farmers.

Saving Inputs Through Automation

The machine is designed to optimise the use of seeds and fertilisers during field operations.

Automated monitoring systems adjust seed delivery based on field conditions, reducing overlap and minimising wastage. This not only lowers input costs but also improves operational efficiency by completing sowing more quickly than conventional methods.

Experts believe such technologies can be especially useful for large farms and Custom Hiring Centres that provide machinery services to smallholders.

Artificial intelligence is becoming an important part of modern agricultural machinery. Smart equipment can collect field data, monitor machine performance and help farmers make better management decisions.

ICAR researchers say integrating sensors, GPS and AI into farm equipment supports precision agriculture by improving efficiency while reducing unnecessary use of agricultural inputs.

As digital technologies become more affordable, intelligent machinery is expected to become increasingly accessible to Indian farmers.

A Step Towards Modern Farm Mechanisation

Mechanisation remains one of the key drivers of agricultural productivity. Advanced machines that improve accuracy while reducing labour requirements can help farmers cope with rising production costs and changing climatic conditions.

Agricultural experts believe AI-enabled machinery will complement existing farm mechanisation programmes by improving operational efficiency and resource conservation. Continued research and field testing will help refine these technologies before wider adoption.

With precision farming gaining momentum in India, smart machines such as AI-powered seeders are expected to contribute to higher productivity, lower input costs and more sustainable agricultural practices.
