Daughter of the Soil”: Dulaaro Devi Nurtured Her Fields with Her Dreams
Dulaaro Devi defied social norms and stereotypes by establishing herself as a successful organic farmer. Initially involved in traditional farming alongside her husband, Dulaaro Devi decided to take up organic farming on her own piece of land, facing numerous challenges along the way.
Dulaaro Devi: When women in the village head out in the morning to fetch water or sit together in the courtyard for a chat, no one would imagine that one of them could someday become the pride of the entire village. But Dulaaro Devi, a resident of a small village in the Gorakhpur district, shattered this belief. She turned the fields, once considered to be under the sole domain of men, into fertile grounds for her dreams, proving that if a woman is determined, even a simple village woman can transform into the “Daughter of the Soil.”
Dulaaro Devi not only gave a new direction to traditional farming but also embraced organic agriculture, demonstrating that farming is an art that can be shaped and perfected with true passion and hard work. Her journey is not just about becoming a successful farmer but also about setting an inspiring example for the entire village and society.
An Inspiring Journey of a Woman Farmer
Dulaaro Devi’s family has been involved in farming for generations. Initially, she supported her husband, Mr. Kamlesh Kumar, in farming activities, but gradually, she started organic farming on her own piece of land. She has a separate plot where she cultivates sugarcane along with a variety of vegetables.
This decision was not easy for her, but she took it up as a challenge. She shared, “I started working in the fields with my husband and learned every aspect of farming step-by-step. After gaining confidence, I began organic farming on my own land, and today, my crops fetch good prices in the market.”
Techniques of Organic Farming: A Mix of Hard Work and Patience
The biggest challenge Dulaaro Devi faced was moving away from chemical farming to adopt organic methods. She began using homemade compost, cow dung, and other organic pesticides.
She said, “Initially, it was quite difficult because organic farming requires more time and effort. But when we harvested our first crop of organic sugarcane and saw people in the market appreciating its sweetness and quality, we knew that our efforts were paying off.”
Cost and Profit of Organic Farming
The annual cost of Dulaaro Devi’s farming is around ₹1.5 to ₹2 lakhs. She mentioned that due to the use of organic fertilizers and pesticides, the expenses are slightly higher, but despite that, her profit is almost ₹5 to ₹6 lakhs.
She also grows vegetables and fruits along with sugarcane, ensuring a steady income throughout the year.
Limited Use of New Technologies
Dulaaro Devi has not yet been able to use modern machinery in her farming. According to her, “There are no modern machines available in our village, and purchasing them is not within our budget. Besides, we want to ensure that local laborers also get work so that their families are supported.”
She believes that while machines save time, it is equally important to provide employment to laborers to support their livelihoods.
Benefit of Government Schemes
Dulaaro Devi has benefited from the Kisan Samman Yojana, which has helped reduce her farming expenses. This scheme has also provided her with financial stability, allowing her to manage her fields more efficiently.
An Inspiration for All Women Farmers
Dulaaro Devi’s story is an inspiration for every woman who wants to move ahead in the field of agriculture. With her confidence and hard work, she has proven that women can also succeed in the field of farming.
Today, Dulaaro Devi is not only a support for her family but also a role model for other women in society. Her journey teaches us that if a woman decides, she can achieve success in any field.
So, let us learn from this inspiring story and provide women with the opportunity to move forward in agriculture and other fields so that they too can create their own unique identity in society.
