Eucalyptus Farming: Eucalyptus is cultivated on a large scale in Australia, because its wood is used for many purposes and good profit can be earned by its cultivation at low cost. Companies are continuously working towards promoting its cultivation in India and providing good saplings to the farmers.

Eucalyptus Farming: Eucalyptus is also known as Gum, Safeda and Nilgiri in our country. You must have often seen its tall trees on the roadside. Its tree grows from 30 to 90 meters in length, but does not grow in width. Therefore, farmers can earn good profit by planting more of its saplings in less space.

Products made from Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus is not cultivated on a large scale in India and it is often seen on the roadside. Whereas the wood of the Safeda tree is very useful. It is used for making boxes, fuel, hard board, pulp, furniture, particle board and buildings. Both cost and effort is less in the cultivation of eucalyptus, but due to lack of information, farmers are not able to earn profit from eucalyptus trees.

There are companies in the country which are trying to solve the market problem of farmers growing eucalyptus trees. A company named Balaji Action Buildable Private Limited not only provides eucalyptus plants to farmers at affordable rates, but is also solving the market problem. Kisan of India had a special conversation with Satendra Sharma, Deputy Project Manager of the firm. He told how his company is promoting eucalyptus cultivation, so that maximum number of farmers benefit.

Many varieties of eucalyptus

Satendra Sharma tells that his firm prepares varieties of plants according to the soil and gives information about it to the farmers. Apart from this, the company’s employees give information to the farmers about the care of the plants, so that they can earn maximum profit.

Market available for eucalyptus

The company is selling saplings at 5 to 9 rupees per plant depending on the variety of the plants. Not only this, after the tree is ready, the company is also making an agreement to buy it from the farmers according to the current market price, so that the farmers do not have to search for the market. After buying from the farmers, the company makes particle boards from the wood of eucalyptus.

Advanced variety of eucalyptus for farmers

Satendra Sharma says that even in big villages, eucalyptus trees are planted more as boundaries and block plantation is very less. Now his company is encouraging farmers for block plantation by making some demos so that they get more profit. He says that the company assures the farmers by seeing the demo that they can also grow it as agro forestry. Not only this, the company takes the soil of the farmers’ fields in the local lab and checks its sample. After that, we tell them which type of plants will be better for their soil.

At what temperature should eucalyptus plants be planted?

Eucalyptus can grow in places with temperature up to 46 degrees Celsius and annual rainfall of 20 to 125 cm. While planting eucalyptus plants, you should keep in mind that there should be a drainage system at the place where you are planting them.

Soil and irrigation in eucalyptus cultivation

Loamy soil is considered most suitable for the growth of eucalyptus plants. Deep layer moist soil and soil with 6.5 to 7.5 pH is best for planting eucalyptus. If you are thinking of planting its plants, then plant it during the rainy season, by doing this there will be no need for irrigation in the beginning and the plants will also get established well.

Eucalyptus plants should be planted at a distance of 2-3 meters on the ridges of the fields. On barren and less fertile land, dense plantation of eucalyptus should be done at a distance of 2 m x 2.5 m. It is advisable to do this at an interval of . Cultivation can be done for two years between the rows. Good profit is obtained even on less fertile land.

Other crops along with eucalyptus cultivation

Farmers cultivating eucalyptus can plant short-term profitable crops like turmeric, ginger, linseed and garlic between the rows of eucalyptus trees. These crops help in reducing the cost of eucalyptus cultivation.

How much profit is there in eucalyptus cultivation?

The cost of eucalyptus cultivation is very low and due to its low width, about 3500 plants can be planted in one hectare. It takes 6 to 8 years for eucalyptus trees to mature. Up to one crore rupees can be earned from eucalyptus.
