Multi-Crop Farming: Tanveer Alam, a farmer practicing multi-crop farming on 12 acres, has written a new chapter of success
The hard work and ingenuity of farmers who experiment with new things in farming make them successful. Tanveer Alam is one such progressive farmer. 45-year-old Tanveer Alam, a resident of Baghauri village in the Sitarganj tehsil of Udham Singh Nagar in Uttarakhand, has successfully practiced multi-crop farming (also known as polyculture) alongside traditional farming on his 12.5 acres (5 hectares) of land. His new technique has not only increased his income but also set an example for other farmers.
Moving Beyond Traditional Farming
Tanveer Alam previously cultivated coarse rice, wheat, peas, and mustard, but last year he tried a new experiment on his 3-acre land: growing multiple crops simultaneously in a single field.
He first sowed wheat. After harvesting the wheat, he planted paddy in the same field. After harvesting the paddy, he sowed sugarcane and, along with the sugarcane, also sowed mustard. Today, sugarcane and eucalyptus trees are flourishing side by side in his field.
How do they do this unique farming?
Tanveer Alam planted eucalyptus trees 25 feet apart in his field. He sowed wheat between these trees. After harvesting the wheat, he planted paddy in the same spot. After harvesting the paddy, he planted sugarcane and sowed mustard on top of the sugarcane. In this way, he was able to produce four different crops from a single field.
Crop Production and Income
Mustard: This year, his field produced 15 quintals of mustard.
Sugarcane: It is expected to produce 1,000 quintals of sugarcane this year.
Wheat: Yields 20-22 quintals per acre.
Rice: Yields 22-25 quintals per acre.
In this way, by cultivating multiple crops from a single field, Tanveer Alam not only made better use of the land but also increased his income significantly.
Tanveer Alam’s Farming Time Table
Around May 20: Start preparing rice seedlings.
By the end of June: Transplant the rice.
After September: After harvesting the rice, sow mustard and peas.
In this way, the field remains cultivated year-round, preventing the land from becoming unused and generating a steady income.
Advantages of Multi-Crop Farming
1. Full use of land: Multiple crops can be grown from a single field.
2. Increased income: Income is generated from different crops.
3. Maintains soil fertility: Growing different crops prevents soil nutrient depletion.
4. Lower costs, higher profits: Once a field is prepared, multiple crops can be grown.
Inspiration for Other Farmers
Tanveer Alam’s success shows that if farmers deviate from traditional methods and experiment with new methods, farming can become profitable. Seeing his technique, many nearby farmers are also turning to multi-crop farming.
Farmers like Tanveer Alam prove that innovation and hard work can achieve great things in farming. He demonstrated that if farming is done correctly, significant profits can be made. His success is an example not only for him but for the entire farming community.
