Narendra Kumar Chhikara, a resident of Tateshwar village in North West Delhi, is an inspirational farmer and entrepreneur who is setting a wonderful example of innovation and self-reliance in the field of food processing. Not letting his disability hinder his progress, Narendra has made his mark in the field of food processing and is providing employment to many people through this industry.
Initial journey and beginning of entrepreneurship
Narendra says, “My aim behind venturing into food processing was not only to improve my economic condition but also to provide self-employment opportunities to other villagers.” He set up his business by taking advantage of the Pradhan Mantri Swa-Nidhi Yojana, in which he got technical assistance and financial support. Under this, he focused on processing local crops and created a network to directly deliver his products to the market.
Technical knowledge and working style of food processing
Narendra said, “Innovation is necessary in the field of food processing. I have started using new machinery for processing fruits and vegetables, which has increased the quality of the product and also made the processing process faster.” His unit manufactures fruit jams, pickles and other food products. Narendra has also adopted eco-friendly techniques to reduce the consumption of water and energy in this unit, which shows his contribution towards environmental protection.
Contribution to employment generation and rural development
Narendra’s food processing venture has created a means of employment for many people in his village and surrounding areas. The workers working with him say that they had limited employment opportunities, but working with Narendra has given them stability and economic independence in their lives. They said, “Narendra ji is not only a good entrepreneur but he also keeps motivating us constantly. His aim is to improve the economic condition of the people and create self-employment opportunities.”

Narendra’s achievements have also been recognised by the government and various institutions. He has been awarded several national and international awards such as the Innovative Farmer Award, Deenbandhu Sir Chhotu Ram – Rashtriya Pratibha Samman, and India Pride Award. Narendra says, “These awards are a source of encouragement for me, which motivates me to improve my work further.”
Benefits of government schemes and future plans
With the financial assistance received under the Pradhan Mantri Swa-Nidhi Yojana, Narendra’s enterprise is growing rapidly. He wants to expand his food processing unit in the coming years and also intends to incorporate new technologies in it. Narendra aims to present his products not only at the national level but also in the international markets, so that Indian rural products can be recognized at the global level.
