Ram Bihari, who does pickle business, is giving employment to women, from making pickles to marketing everything
Ram Bihari: Pickle business is a profitable deal, which brings the taste of home to the market. Many small brands have started it on a small scale and made it big.
Pickles have special importance in the food of us Indians. There is hardly any house in our country where pickles are not made. In the village, many women used to go to each other’s house and help in making pickles, but urban people prefer to buy pickles instead of making them. In such a situation, doing the business of homemade pickles can prove to be a profitable deal.
There are many such brands from Bihar to Maharashtra which started on a small scale, but now the taste of their pickles has become popular on everyone’s tongue. Ram Bihari, a resident of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has also been doing the business of making pickles for about 15 years, along with this he is also helping women to become self-reliant. Ram Bihari discussed his journey and the contribution of women with Kisan of India correspondent Sarvesh Bundeli.
Work started with the help of village women
One of the easy businesses that can be started on a low budget is pickle making. Ram Bihari, a resident of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, has been doing pickle business for the last 15 years. The special thing about his business is that many women are associated with it. It would not be wrong to say that women are the backbone of his business. Ram Bihari says that he first got his son a diploma in food processing and then with the help of village women, he started pickle making by forming a company called Amulya Food Products.
20-25 types of pickles
Ram Bihari tells that he makes different types of pickles and jams. At present, he has 20-25 types of pickles which include garlic pickle, green chilli pickle, stuffed chilli pickle, mango pickle with asafoetida, jackfruit, bitter gourd, lasoda, ginger etc. One of his special products is ginger-garlic chutney which sells the most. Apart from this, he is also making gooseberry jam, apple jam, wood apple jam and sweet mango and sweet lemon etc.
Employment to women
About 10 women are associated with Ram Bihari’s Amulya Food Product Company, who do different types of work. Like some women peel garlic, cut mango, jackfruit, chilli etc., that is, some women only do the cutting work, some women mix spices and make pickles and some do the packing work. The special thing is that women also do the marketing of pickles. Ram Bihari says that in the coming time, he plans to do can packing of pickles.
Preserve seasonal items
Mango, jackfruit, amla, bitter gourd and other such items are available seasonally, so it is not possible to make pickles of these throughout the year. Therefore, Ram Bihari says that he buys such items in large quantities and preserves them and then when required, he mixes spices and makes pickles.
How to do marketing
Whether it is about farmers or small entrepreneurs, marketing is a big problem for them. Ask farmers to grow anything, they will grow it, but the problem arises in selling it. In such a situation, about how Ram Bihari markets his product, he says that his product is marketed by women, who go door-to-door and tell people about their product, what are the specialties of their product and how it is different from others.
Many are associated with small farmers
Ram Bihari is not only giving employment to women, he is also solving the marketing problem of many small farmers. Actually, 8-10 farmers are associated with him whom he asks to produce things like garlic, ginger, green chillies, carrots, bitter gourd and he also provides seeds etc. to the farmers.
Not only this, Ram Bihari asks different farmers to produce different things like bitter gourd, green chillies and carrots. Then he buys their crop from the field itself, so the farmers do not need to go to the market. He buys the crop from the farmers at the wholesale market rate. Ram Bihari says that he tells the farmers to give him the same rate as the wholesale market rate, or take 1 rupee more is not less.
