Consumption and Export of Edible Oils in India 

About 250 lakh tonnes of edible oils are consumed in the country, of which domestic production is 80 lakh tonnes, while the Government of India imports to meet the remaining two-thirds of the consumption. The share of rice bran oil in this is only about 14 percent. At the same time, 3.04 lakh tonnes of sunflower oil is produced from 7.94 lakh hectares of area in the state of Karnataka, which is the largest sunflower producing state in the country. It is followed by Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, Odisha and Tamil Nadu.

Let us tell you that India imports 25 lakh tonnes of sunflower oil every year. Of this, 70 percent is imported from Ukraine, 20 percent from Russia and the remaining 10 percent from Argentina. Of all the oils imported by India, palm oil or palmolein is the highest at about 80 percent. If we talk about non-traditional edible oils in India, then rice bran oil is also being used a lot. Rice bran oil is extracted from paddy, which farmers sell in markets or rice mills. Oil is produced from paddy husk, but farmers do not get direct benefit from its price. 

Benefits of Rice Bran Oil 

Rice bran oil shines like gold. This oil has a mild aroma of rice, but it is tasteless. Its use is considered beneficial for health. According to WHO, rice bran oil controls cholesterol. Rice bran oil contains a lot of nutrients. Antioxidant properties are also found in it. Poly-unsaturated fat and mono-unsaturated fat are also present in equal amounts.

Let us tell you that the American Heart Association, World Health Organization (WHO), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) have also recommended the use of this oil to control cholesterol, blood pressure and sugar levels, because eating this oil strengthens the body’s immune system, is considered beneficial to prevent premature aging, and slow down the symptoms of neuro-degenerative.

Benefits of Sunflower Oil 

Sunflower oil is extracted by pressing sunflower seeds. This oil is light golden in color. It contains low saturated fat and high amount of PUFA. Apart from this, its oil is also used in medicines. Sunflower oil contains about 64 percent linoleic acid, which reduces heart cholesterol. Sunflower cake contains 40 to 44 percent protein. It is also used in making beauty products.

Farming of Sunflower 

Farmers can get good yield in sunflower cultivation by adopting advanced farming techniques. Sunflower yield in non-irrigated areas is 12-15 quintals and in irrigated areas, 20-25 quintals per hectare is excellent yield. That is why adopting sunflower cultivation as much as possible proves to be a great profitable deal for farmers.

Rice Bran Oil Processing 

Chemical Solvent Process or direct crushing of paddy straw is adopted to extract oil from paddy husk. Direct crushing of straw gives less ‘rice bran oil’, this crushing process is called ‘mechanical method’. Chemical Solvent method is adopted for the production of ‘rice bran oil’ on a large scale. This gives indirect benefit to the farmers, because farmers sell paddy husk to rice mills. After which it is processed. Let us tell you that rice bran oil is extracted from the first layer of rice, which is called husk. It is obtained in the form of oil at 232 degrees Celsius.

Market Analysis Of Rice Bran Oil 

Talking about the market of rice bran oil, it is estimated to be 532.67 million liters in the year 2024. It is expected to reach 714.18 million liters by the year 2029. These are global market figures. Rice bran oil is used extensively in cooking in Asia-Pacific cuisine.

The Directorate of Economics and Statistics of the Government of India estimates that rice production in India will increase from about 2.6 thousand kg per hectare to about 2.7 thousand kg per hectare, which will further expand the market for ‘Rice Bran Oil’. The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited (NAFED) has announced the launch of a chain of rice bran oil, which is a supplement of organic ingredients.

Government of India’s Policy For Rice Bran Oil 

To promote rice bran oil, NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation Limited) of the Food and Supplies Department of the Government of India has also launched Fortified Bran Rice Oil. Rice bran oil is being marketed at all NAFED stores and on several online platforms. At the same time, workshops are being organized with rice mill owners under the instructions given by the government to the regional offices of FCI (Food Corporation of India). Under this, information is being given about the profit and production of rice bran oil. Along with this, strategies are also being made to meet the technical requirements in this regard in the rice mill.

FCI’s Assessment Of Rice Bran Oil Production 

Recently, the Central Government has asked the Food Corporation of India to provide details of the number of rice mills, their milling capacity, the amount of paddy husk and the amount of husk for oil, so that it will be assessed how much capacity needs to be increased for the production of rice bran oil.

Promotion of Rice Bran Oil 

India is constantly engaged in the effort to make the country self-sufficient in oilseed production. To meet the domestic demand, edible oil worth Rs 65 to 70 thousand crores has to be imported annually. Now the government is trying to promote the use of rice bran oil instead of palm oil, so that dependence on palm oil is reduced.

Production of Rice Bran Oil in the country 

The production of ‘rice bran oil’ in the country is 18 lakh tonnes based on government data. The target is to increase it further. Under this, all the main paddy cultivating states have been asked to increase the capacity of the existing rice mills. States like Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab have agreed to set up additional ‘Rice Bran Oil Solvent Extraction Plants’.

Sunflower seeds are processed to extract sunflower oil. On the other hand, the outer layer covering the rice grain is processed to extract rice bran oil.

India, China, Vietnam, Japan and Thailand are the largest producers and exporters of sunflower oil, while Russia and Ukraine are the largest producers and exporters of rice bran oil.

A dose of sunflower oil provides 124 calories, while a diet of rice bran oil provides 120 calories.
