Seed Society Helps Tribal Farmers Seed committees help tribal farmersIn Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh, the process of increase in agricultural production and crop diversification has strengthened the lifestyle of tribal farmers. Seeds are very important for tribal farmers, because good and quality seeds are needed for the stability of agricultural production. But, tribal farmers have been facing many problems such as lack of quality seeds, not getting seeds on time, high price of seeds and interference of middlemen. To solve these problems, initiatives like Seed Society Helps Tribal Farmers were started, due to which now the availability of good seeds is becoming easier for tribal farmers.
Formation of Seed Committees
Scientists of NAIP Project of KVK formed seed committees to increase the availability of quality seeds in the tribal areas of Jhabua district. This step proved to be important in making farmers aware, increasing their capacity and adopting better seed production techniques. Scientists prepared the administrative and legal procedures for the formation of seed committees and educated the farmers about improved seed production.
Subsequently, farmers of different villages unanimously established seed committees. These committees were named as Lakshmi Beej Utpadak Sahakari Sanstha Maryadit, Golabari, Sharda Beej Utpadak Sahakari Sanstha Maryadit and Narsingrunda (Rotla). Each committee included 21-22 farmers as members.
The main objective of the “Seed Society” was to provide timely and quality seeds to the tribal farmers so that their agricultural productivity could be increased. These committees paid special attention to seed production, processing, storage and monitoring of quality standards.
Training and Awareness
Under the NAIP Project, scientists organized regular training sessions for seed production technology, quality control and marketing. Along with this, the members of the seed committees were also informed about the measures required to ensure the quality of seeds.
The result was that the members of the seed committees were not only able to produce quality seeds, but they also adopted new methods of marketing and distribution. Now they are not only distributing seeds in their community, but are also providing the benefit of high quality seeds to other farmers.
Impact of Seed Society on tribal farmers
The establishment of seed societies has brought many benefits to tribal farmers. Earlier, where farmers used to spend a lot of time and effort in looking for good seeds for their crops, now they are easily able to access quality seeds. Seed societies help tribal farmers (Seed Society Helps Tribal Farmers) so that they can run their agricultural work better and their production can increase. Apart from this, farmers are now getting the right price for their crops. Due to the improvement in the seed production process and adoption of better methods, farmers are now getting more production and their income has also increased.
In the last two years, seed societies have produced about 307.2 tonnes of quality seeds. These include seeds of major crops such as soybean, maize, pigeon pea, black gram, wheat and gram. For example, 72.2 tonnes of soybean, 61.0 tonnes of maize, 3.0 tonnes of pigeon pea, 52.2 tonnes of wheat and 115.7 tonnes of gram seeds were produced.

At present, 21 seed societies are providing services to tribal farmers in Dhar district. With the help of these committees, tribal farmers are now getting high quality seeds, which is improving their crops and also increasing production.
In addition, these committees have given stable and secure livelihood to tribal farmers, which has improved their standard of living. This model has now become an example in tribal areas. It proves that when farmers get the right resources and technology, they can do very well in farming.
This success has not only increased the income of farmers, but it is also strengthening their economic future. This campaign is an important step for tribal farmers, which is moving them towards development and prosperity.
