Maharashtra Launches India’s First AI-Based Sugarcane Advisory Programme for Farmers

0

Maharashtra is expanding the use of artificial intelligence in agriculture with a new AI-based advisory programme for sugarcane farmers. The initiative combines satellite imagery, weather forecasts, field observations and crop data to provide real-time recommendations on irrigation, fertiliser application and pest management.

The programme aims to help farmers make timely decisions, reduce unnecessary input use and improve sugarcane productivity. Officials believe digital advisories can also lower production costs while promoting more efficient use of water.

The advisory platform analyses multiple sources of information before generating recommendations.

Satellite images monitor crop growth, weather data tracks changing field conditions, and AI models estimate crop water requirements and pest risks. Farmers receive timely advisories through mobile applications and extension workers.

Instead of following fixed schedules, farmers can manage their crop based on actual field conditions.

Sugarcane is one of India’s most water-intensive crops.

The AI system recommends irrigation according to weather conditions and crop growth rather than routine watering. This helps farmers avoid over-irrigation, conserve groundwater and improve water-use efficiency.

Officials say better irrigation management can also improve cane quality and reduce cultivation costs.

Early Pest and Disease Alerts

The platform also supports crop protection.

Using weather patterns and field observations, the system identifies conditions that favour pest or disease outbreaks. Farmers receive early warnings and recommendations for timely intervention, reducing the risk of major crop losses.

The approach supports more targeted pesticide use instead of routine preventive spraying.

Digital advisories are becoming an important part of modern agriculture.

States with major sugarcane cultivation, including Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Bihar, could adopt similar AI-powered advisory systems to improve productivity while conserving water.

The model could also be expanded to crops such as paddy, cotton, maize and soybean by integrating it with Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) and state agriculture departments.

Digital Advice Is Becoming as Important as Farm Inputs

Farmers have traditionally depended on experience and local advice to manage crops. Artificial intelligence is adding another layer by analysing large volumes of data and providing field-specific recommendations.

As more states invest in digital agriculture, AI-powered advisory systems could become a regular part of farming, helping growers make better decisions, reduce costs and improve productivity while using natural resources more efficiently.
