Karnataka’s Vasundhara followed new avenues of Food Processing

You too can start a food processing homemade products business like 40-year-old Vasundhara Hegde from North Karnataka. Learn in this article how Vasundhara, who has been fond of agriculture and agricultural products since childhood, created a business worth lakhs with the help of value-added products.

There was already an inclination towards food processing 

Vasundhara Hegde has been seeing agricultural activities and food processing around her since childhood, due to which she was also inclined towards this. She used to make food products from the things available at home. She continued this work even after marriage. She started making different types of products from betel nut, banana and black pepper.

Vasundhara Hegde joined a group called Mahila Marukatte (Ladies Market) as a member. The motive of this group is to empower women who make food products at home in Karnataka.

Food processing technology made and improved 

The group had a Facebook group by the name Mahila Marukatte, through which home made products were sold online. This experience was completely new for Vasundhara. After joining other women members of the group, she further improved her food processing techniques.

New idea came from seeing others 

Not only this, she also got a new idea from seeing the value added products made by other women. She has a dryer machine, which she uses to dry betel nuts. She thought why not use it to dry bananas and jackfruits. However, she was not sure about the success of this experiment. Nevertheless, she followed her heart and used a drying machine to dry bananas and jackfruit that were perishable during the monsoon season. Then they started making many more products like Dried Banana, Banana Flour, Banana Chips, Dried Jackfruit, Jackfruit Pulp, Jackfruit Seed Powder, Jackfruit Chips and many more. Apart from this, they also manufacture other value added products like Turmeric Powder, Kokum Peel, Herbal Tea Powder, Curd Chilli. 

Started her own business 

She started her business with the name ‘Manjushree Home Products’ in June 2020 to sell her products. Apart from Karnataka, their products are also sold in Maharashtra, West Bengal, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Goa, Lakshadweep and Telangana. Not only this, their products are also being exported to Singapore, United Kingdom and America. She heavily uses social media, especially Facebook and WhatsApp, for marketing her products.

Chemical and Preservative free product 

Vasundhar Hegde’s products are completely organic. No chemical or preservatives are used in this. Vasundhara Hegde aims to inspire the women of Karnataka to start their own food processing business. They believe that apart from preventing wastage of food products, better use of agricultural products can be made. Through her venture, she wants to process different types of agricultural products. The turnover of his business in 2020-21 was around Rs 5 lakh.
