Farmers usually realise an animal is sick only after it stops eating, produces less milk or shows visible signs of illness. By then, treatment is often more expensive and recovery takes longer.
Scientists are now developing AI-enabled smart ear tags that continuously monitor cattle and alert farmers when an animal’s behaviour changes. These lightweight devices combine motion sensors, temperature monitoring and artificial intelligence to detect early signs of illness, heat stress and reproductive activity. Recent research shows wearable sensors are becoming one of the fastest-growing technologies in precision livestock farming.
Unlike conventional identification tags, smart ear tags continuously record animal movement throughout the day.
The system tracks walking activity, feeding time, rumination, resting behaviour and body temperature. AI analyses these data to identify unusual patterns that may indicate disease or stress.
Instead of relying on periodic visual inspections, farmers receive alerts on their smartphones whenever an animal’s behaviour changes significantly.
Early Detection Helps Farmers Act Faster
Many livestock diseases develop gradually before obvious symptoms appear.
Researchers say AI can identify subtle behavioural changes several days before farmers notice visible illness. Early treatment reduces veterinary costs, improves recovery rates and prevents disease from spreading to other animals.
The technology also helps detect heat stress during summer, allowing farmers to provide shade, water or cooling measures before production declines.
The wearable devices also improve reproductive management.
Changes in activity levels help identify animals that have entered heat, making it easier to determine the right time for artificial insemination. This increases conception rates while reducing missed breeding opportunities.
Scientists say combining AI with wearable sensors can improve both animal health and reproductive efficiency.
India has the world’s largest cattle population, but continuous health monitoring is still uncommon outside a few organised dairy farms.
AI-enabled ear tags could help dairy cooperatives, commercial farms and Farmer Producer Organisations monitor animals more efficiently. The technology would be especially useful in Gujarat, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka, where dairy farming is a major source of rural income.
If supported through government livestock health programmes and dairy cooperatives, smart wearables could help reduce disease losses, improve milk production and strengthen preventive veterinary care.
Wearables Are Changing Livestock Farming
Digital technology is no longer limited to crop farming. Wearable sensors are transforming the way farmers manage livestock by providing continuous, real-time information about every animal.
As artificial intelligence becomes more affordable, smart ear tags could become as common as identification tags, helping farmers detect health problems earlier, improve productivity and raise healthier animals with fewer losses.
