Tripura Farmers Look Beyond Single Crops for Higher Farm Income

Farmers in Tripura are being encouraged to move beyond depending on a single crop by adding other income-generating activities to their farms. ICAR recently trained 110 farmers in Sepahijala district on integrated farming systems. The programme focused on combining crop production with activities such as fish production, poultry, planting material and small-scale processing.

Many small farmers depend heavily on income from one or two crops. This can create financial pressure when weather damages a crop or market prices fall. Integrated farming aims to spread that risk by combining different farm activities.

ICAR-RCER, Patna, organised the three-day programme from August 24 to 26 in collaboration with the College of Fisheries and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sepahijala. The programme encouraged farmers to add at least one activity with the potential to generate higher income.

Fish, poultry and processing can add value

ICAR highlighted several activities that farmers can include depending on their resources and local conditions.

These included:

• Planting material production
• Poultry incubation
• Fish spawn and fingerling production
• Small-scale food processing

The idea is not that every farmer should adopt all these activities. A farmer with a pond may find fisheries suitable. Another farmer may have better opportunities in poultry or nursery production. The choice should depend on land, water, skills and local demand.

Crop farming often provides income only at specific points during the year. Livestock, fisheries, nursery production or processing can create income at other times. This can help farm households manage expenses between crop harvests.

For example, a farmer growing crops and raising fish may have two different production cycles. A farmer operating a small nursery can also earn from selling planting material instead of waiting only for a crop harvest. The ICAR programme focused on this broader approach to improving farm productivity and profitability.

Farmers need to choose activities carefully

Adding another farm activity does not automatically increase income. Every activity requires investment, labour and market access. A poultry unit needs reliable feed and animal health support. Fish farming requires water management.

A processing unit needs buyers and suitable infrastructure. Farmers should therefore study local demand before investing. The most suitable activity is one that fits the existing farm rather than creating an additional burden.

Processing can help farmers move beyond selling only raw produce. Depending on the crop and local market, farmers can explore cleaning, grading, drying or making value-added products. This can extend the shelf life of some agricultural products and create opportunities to sell them beyond the harvest season.

Farmer groups can also play a role. A group may find it easier to invest in shared processing equipment than an individual small farmer.

The training in Sepahijala brought together farmers to discuss farming as a combination of different activities rather than separate enterprises. ICAR said integrated farming can support sustainable agriculture, technology adoption and livelihood improvement.

For small farmers, the key lesson is practical. The farm does not always need to depend on one crop for all its income. A suitable combination of crops, livestock, fisheries or value addition can create more than one source of earnings. The challenge is to choose activities that match the farmer’s resources and have a reliable market. That decision may matter more than simply adding more activities to the farm.
