The Union Cabinet has approved a five-year extension of the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, ensuring that eligible farmers continue receiving annual financial assistance until 2030-31. The government has allocated ₹3.15 lakh crore for the extended period, reaffirming its commitment to supporting farm incomes and strengthening rural agriculture.
Launched in 2019, PM-KISAN provides ₹6,000 every year to eligible landholding farmer families. The amount is transferred directly into beneficiaries’ bank accounts in three equal instalments of ₹2,000 through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. Officials said the continuation of the scheme will help farmers meet cultivation expenses while improving access to timely financial support.
The Cabinet decision extends one of India’s largest farmer welfare programmes for another five years. According to the government, the scheme has become an important source of income support for millions of farming families, helping them purchase seeds, fertilisers, farm inputs and other agricultural requirements before every cropping season.
Officials said the fresh allocation of ₹3.15 lakh crore will ensure uninterrupted implementation of the programme from 2026-27 to 2030-31. The extension is expected to provide financial stability to farmers while reducing their dependence on informal credit sources.
Over 9 Crore Farmers Continue to Benefit
Since its launch, PM-KISAN has become one of the country’s largest direct income support programmes. The government said more than 4.47 lakh crore has already been transferred to eligible farmers through successive instalments.
Officials added that the scheme has benefited over 94 million farmers, with women farmers accounting for a significant share of the beneficiaries. Direct transfer into bank accounts has improved transparency while reducing delays in payments.
The financial assistance is intended to supplement farmers’ income rather than replace other agricultural support programmes. It helps cultivators meet routine farming expenses throughout the year.
Agricultural experts say timely financial assistance allows farmers to invest in quality seeds, fertilisers, irrigation and crop protection measures without waiting for credit.
The government believes the continuation of PM-KISAN will improve farmers’ liquidity during critical sowing seasons while encouraging investment in agricultural production. Officials also noted that the scheme complements several other government initiatives focused on mechanisation, crop insurance and irrigation.

The Cabinet’s decision reflects the government’s continued focus on strengthening rural incomes and supporting agriculture through direct financial assistance.
With funding now secured until 2030-31, PM-KISAN will remain one of the country’s flagship farmer welfare programmes. The extension provides certainty to millions of farming families who rely on the annual support to manage cultivation expenses and sustain agricultural production.
