The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has said that the monsoon received so far is sufficient to sustain Kharif crops across most parts of the country, offering relief to farmers after concerns over uneven rainfall during the early weeks of the season. Scientists noted that rainfall distribution has improved considerably, creating favourable conditions for the growth of major crops such as paddy, soybean, cotton, maize and pulses.
The assessment comes even as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast below-normal rainfall during August, raising concerns about moisture availability during the later stages of crop growth. ICAR said the rainfall received so far has created a strong foundation for the current Kharif season, although farmers should continue following crop advisories and water conservation practices.
According to ICAR, rainfall during the season has been adequate to support agricultural operations in most regions. The improved rainfall has helped farmers complete sowing and establish crops under favourable soil moisture conditions.
Scientists said crops are showing healthy growth in many agricultural states, reducing fears of widespread drought stress. Adequate rainfall has also improved water availability for irrigation reservoirs and groundwater recharge, supporting agricultural activities during the remaining crop season.
Farmers Advised to Use Water Carefully
Although crop conditions remain favourable, researchers have advised farmers not to become complacent.
With August rainfall expected to remain below the long-period average, efficient water management will become increasingly important. Farmers are encouraged to conserve available moisture through mulching, proper irrigation scheduling and timely intercultural operations to minimise water loss.
Agricultural experts also recommend following advisories issued by Krishi Vigyan Kendras and state agriculture departments, particularly in regions that may receive uneven rainfall during the coming weeks.
Weather conditions during August and September will play an important role in determining final crop yields.
Rice, soybean, cotton and pulses require adequate moisture during flowering and grain development. Prolonged dry spells during these stages could affect productivity even if sowing conditions were favourable earlier in the season.
Researchers are closely monitoring rainfall patterns and advising farmers to adopt climate-resilient practices wherever possible.

ICAR’s assessment provides confidence that the current monsoon has supported agricultural activities across much of the country. At the same time, scientists stress that careful crop management remains essential because weather conditions can change quickly during the remaining monsoon period.
By combining timely advisories, efficient water management and scientific farming practices, farmers can protect their crops and improve productivity even if rainfall declines during August. ICAR says continued monitoring and farmer awareness will remain important as the Kharif season progresses.
