India has stepped up efforts to increase domestic pulse production by strengthening support for farmers growing tur, urad, moong, chana and lentils. The government is expanding procurement, promoting improved seed varieties and encouraging scientific cultivation practices to reduce dependence on imports while improving farmer incomes.
Pulses remain an essential part of India’s food basket, yet domestic production often falls short of demand because of erratic weather, pests and low productivity. Agricultural scientists believe better seed technology, timely procurement and improved crop management can help bridge this gap.
The government is encouraging farmers to bring more area under pulse cultivation while improving productivity on existing farmland.
Improved varieties developed by ICAR, balanced nutrient management and integrated pest control are being promoted through Krishi Vigyan Kendras and state agriculture departments. Researchers say these technologies can significantly increase yields without requiring additional land.
Pulse cultivation is also being encouraged in rice fallows and other suitable areas to utilise land more efficiently.
Assured Procurement to Encourage Farmers
Procurement at the Minimum Support Price remains one of the biggest incentives for pulse growers.
Government agencies continue to procure pulses under price support operations to protect farmers from market fluctuations. Stable procurement encourages farmers to expand cultivation because they have greater confidence in receiving remunerative prices.
Officials say stronger procurement systems will remain essential for achieving long-term self-sufficiency in pulses.
Scientists recommend using certified seeds, timely sowing and proper moisture management to improve productivity.
Disease-resistant and climate-resilient varieties are helping farmers reduce crop losses caused by wilt, mosaic diseases and irregular rainfall. Improved agronomic practices are also lowering production risks while increasing grain quality.
Extension programmes are providing training on nutrient management, seed treatment and integrated pest management.
Strengthening Food Security
Pulses are a major source of protein for millions of Indians and play an important role in improving soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation.
Agricultural experts believe increasing domestic pulse production will strengthen food security, reduce import dependence and improve farm incomes. Continued investment in research, quality seeds and farmer support programmes is expected to help India move closer to self-sufficiency while ensuring stable supplies for consumers.
