Shri Satyawan Saharawat, a progressive farmer of “SS Nursery Farm” located in village Dariyapur Kalan, North Delhi, is known for his innovative techniques and unique efforts in the field of Indian agriculture. Born on July 01, 1969, Shri Satyawan joined farming with his father right after schooling. After completing schooling, he entered farming with his father and started adopting the latest technologies by moving away from traditional agricultural practices.

With the guidance of scientists from Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Delhi, he added new dimensions to agriculture and transformed it into an Integrated Farming System. His thinking was different from the traditional farming methods; he adopted a scientific approach and moved towards innovation in agriculture.

Use of Scientific Approach and New Technologies

Shri Satyawan adopted modern agricultural practices under the guidance of scientists of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) and Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Delhi. He converted farming into Integrated Farming System. Following are his special achievements:

1. Poly-house Technology: He developed nurseries of off-season vegetables and plants using poly-house technology. This gave farmers a new means of earning additional income.

2. Intercropping System: Mr. Satyawan adopted the method of growing different crops simultaneously to increase productivity and make optimum use of land.

3. Organic Farming and Biogas Plant: He promoted organic farming as well as crop residue management. Along with this, he also met the energy needs by using biogas plant.

4. Value Addition and Market Linkage: He specialized in seed production of vegetables and crops, which increased his income.

5. Dairy Farming: He also achieved success in the dairy sector by rearing indigenous breed cows on his farm.

Innovation through Modern Agriculture

Shri Satyawan skillfully used scientific and modern techniques along with traditional farming. Following are his major achievements:

1. Poly-house technology: He developed off-season nurseries through poly-houses, which not only increased production but also benefited farmers with better yield of crops throughout the year.

2. Short-term vegetable production: He gave priority to the cultivation of fast-growing vegetables, which enabled farmers to earn quick income.

3. Intercropping system: By growing different vegetables and crops together under intercropping system, he increased land utilization and production capacity.

4. Crop residue management: Instead of wasting crop residues, he reused them, thus promoting environmental protection and productivity.

5. Organic Farming and Nutrient Management: He implemented the system of integrated nutrient management to maintain soil fertility by adopting organic farming.

6. Use of Bio Gas Plant and Advanced Equipment: He fulfilled the energy needs by constructing biogas plant and made farming easy and efficient by using modern agricultural equipment.

7. Dairy Farm and Intercropping: He promoted agricultural diversification through dairy farm and intercropping system based on indigenous breeds.

8. Value Addition and Market Linkage: He paid special attention to vegetable seed production and their value addition, which increased the income of farmers and increased the demand for their products in the market.
