Yogesh Jain takes a Step Towards Innovation and Sustainability Through Natural Farming
Yogesh Jain is an experienced and innovative farmer who has been actively contributing to the field of natural and organic farming for the past 12-13 years. His 15-acre farm is known not only for the production of diverse crops but also for his innovations in water conservation, solar energy, and organic fertilizer production. In a conversation with “Kisan of India,” he shared his farming experiences, innovations, and his vision for the future of agriculture.
The Importance of Natural Farming and Crop Diversity
Yogesh Jain’s farm has emerged as a successful model of natural farming. He has adopted chemical- and pesticide-free farming, which enhances soil fertility and improves crop quality. His farm produces organic crops like amla (Indian gooseberry), lemon, and bael (wood apple), along with spices such as turmeric, cumin, fenugreek, and coriander.
Talking about natural farming, Yogesh says, “Natural farming not only improves crop quality but also sustains soil health over time. It is the best way of sustainable farming, which also doesn’t harm the environment.”
Modernizing Farming with Water Conservation and Solar Energy
Yogesh Jain’s farm is a prime example of modernizing agriculture through water conservation and solar energy. He has built farm ponds, which have increased the groundwater levels on his farm, ensuring a steady water supply even during droughts.
Additionally, by using solar pumps and a drip irrigation system, he saves both water and electricity. “Our groundwater level was very low, but after building farm ponds, the situation has improved. Solar pumps and drip irrigation have helped us produce more with less water,” he says.
Contribution of Dairy Farming and Breeding Center
Yogesh Jain’s farm isn’t just limited to crop production. He has established a center for breeding indigenous cows, where native breeds are nurtured and bred. The aim is not only to increase milk production but also to use cow dung and urine for making organic fertilizers.
Yogesh explains, “In our breeding center, we primarily rear Gir and Tharparkar cows. We get high-quality dung and urine from these cows, which we use to make our organic fertilizers.”
Basmati Rice Farming: A Successful Endeavor
In 2018, Yogesh Jain also began cultivating Basmati rice. Previously, farmers in his region used to grow regular paddy, which yielded relatively low profits. Yogesh educated them on the benefits and economic advantages of growing Basmati rice.
Now, many farmers in his area have shifted to cultivating Basmati rice and are earning higher profits. “Basmati rice farming has increased farmers’ incomes. Earlier, they sold their regular paddy at low prices, but now they get a good price for Basmati rice,” he adds.
Innovation in Spice Farming
Yogesh Jain has also introduced innovations in spice farming. He grows organic turmeric, cumin, fenugreek, and coriander on his farm. His turmeric farming, in particular, has garnered attention because he grows it organically and markets it widely.
He shares, “Our turmeric farming is done organically, which results in superior taste and quality. We are planning to expand its availability beyond the local market.”
Benefits of Government Schemes and Awards
Yogesh Jain has leveraged government schemes to implement technologies such as solar pumps and drip irrigation on his farm. He has received subsidies under agricultural programs, making his farming more efficient and cost-effective. He has also been honored with various awards for his outstanding contributions to farming.
Community Engagement and Training Programs for Farmers
Yogesh Jain has not only improved his own farm but also trained other farmers in his community. Twice a year, his farm hosts training programs where farmers learn about natural farming, water conservation, and the use of solar energy.
“We want more farmers to adopt organic and natural farming. That’s why we train them and show them how it can reduce their costs and increase profits,” he says.
The Future of Farming: Towards Innovation and Sustainability
Yogesh Jain believes that the future of farming lies in natural and sustainable practices. He says, “By embracing innovation and sustainability in farming, not only do farmers benefit, but the environment is also preserved. Given the growing demand for organic produce, this will become an important opportunity for farmers in the future.”
A Symbol of Innovation, Community Engagement, and Sustainability
Yogesh Jain’s journey is proof of how a farmer can bring about significant change in the lives of his region and community. Through the proper use of natural resources and farmer training programs, he has not only increased his farm’s yield but also inspired other farmers to follow a sustainable and profitable path.
