PM Fasal Bima Yojana: Complete Guide Every Indian Farmer Must Read

0

Crop failure due to drought, floods, pest attacks, or unseasonal rain can destroy an entire year’s income within days. PM Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) is India’s most important crop insurance scheme designed to protect farmers from exactly these losses. Launched in 2016, it covers a wide range of crops across all states. Yet millions of eligible farmers still do not enroll or do not know how to claim compensation. This guide explains everything you need to know about this scheme in simple terms.

What Does PMFBY Cover?

PMFBY covers losses caused by natural calamities like drought, flood, hailstorm, cyclone, lightning, and landslide. It also covers damage from pest and disease attacks, as well as post-harvest losses for up to 14 days after cutting if produce is left in the field. Prevented sowing due to adverse weather is also covered under the scheme. Both loanee farmers — those who take crop loans from banks — and non-loanee voluntary farmers can enroll. The coverage is comprehensive and protects the entire crop cycle from sowing to harvest.

How Much Premium Does a Farmer Pay?

The premium under PMFBY is heavily subsidized by the government, making it very affordable. Farmers pay only 2% of the sum insured for Kharif crops, 1.5% for Rabi crops, and 5% for annual horticulture and commercial crops. The remaining premium is shared equally between the central and state governments. For example, if your paddy crop is insured for Rs. 50,000 and the premium rate is 2%, you pay only Rs. 1,000 for the entire Kharif season. This is extremely low protection for a very large financial risk that farmers face every season.

How to Enroll in PMFBY

Loanee farmers who take Kisan Credit Card loans are automatically enrolled in PMFBY. Non-loanee farmers must apply voluntarily before the deadline — usually the last date for sowing notification in each state. You can apply through the official PMFBY portal at pmfby.gov.in, through your bank branch, Common Service Centres (CSCs), or through the Pradhan Mantri Kisan app. You will need your Aadhaar card, land records (Khasra/Khatauni), bank account details, and sown crop declaration to complete the enrollment process smoothly.

How to Claim Compensation

If your crop suffers damage, report it immediately — within 72 hours of the damage occurring. You can report through the crop insurance app, by calling the PMFBY toll-free number 1800-200-7710, or by visiting your bank or CSC. The insurance company sends surveyors to assess crop damage within 7 to 10 days of the complaint. After verification, compensation is directly transferred to your registered bank account. Keeping photos and videos of your damaged crop as evidence makes the claims process significantly faster and smoother.

Common Problems and How to Avoid Them

Many farmers face delays in compensation because of incorrect bank account details, wrong land record entries, or late enrollment. Always double-check your Aadhaar-linked bank account number at the time of enrollment. Ensure your land records are updated and show the correct crop sown on your plot. Enroll before the deadline — late applications are rejected without exception. If your claim is delayed beyond 2 months, file a complaint on the grievance portal at pgportal.gov.in or contact your District Agriculture Officer directly for faster resolution.

Recent Improvements in the Scheme

The government has made PMFBY more farmer-friendly in recent years. Technology-based crop damage assessment using satellite imagery and drones now speeds up claim processing. WINDS (Weather Information Network Data Systems) stations have been set up across India to improve local weather data accuracy. Face authentication through Aadhaar reduces fraud. States like Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh have simplified the enrollment process through dedicated farmer mobile applications. These changes mean that farmers who enroll today will receive faster, more accurate, and more transparent insurance payouts than ever before.
