Punjab Police Officer’s Organic Gold Model Inspires Farmers

Wearing a police uniform by day and working on his farm whenever time allows, Jarnail Singh from Baddowal village in Ludhiana, Punjab, is proving that farming and public service can go hand in hand. Through his Organic Gold initiative, he has created a natural farming model that promotes healthy food, fair prices for farmers and sustainable agriculture. His work is now inspiring farmers and consumers across Punjab.

Jarnail’s journey into natural farming did not begin as a business idea. It started with a personal health challenge that changed the way he viewed food and agriculture.

Jarnail suffered from chronic sinusitis and underwent four surgeries, but his condition did not improve. Doctors advised him to strengthen his immunity by eating clean, chemical-free food instead of relying only on medicines.

Motivated by this advice, he started a small kitchen garden. Although his first attempts were unsuccessful, he did not give up. He later leased farmland in Baddowal and enrolled in training programmes at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) to learn scientific methods of natural farming.

The knowledge he gained helped him develop a farming system that avoids synthetic fertilisers and pesticides while maintaining healthy soil and quality produce.

Building a Farm Around Nature

Jarnail follows several practices that improve soil health and reduce chemical use.

Instead of frequent ploughing, he disturbs the soil as little as possible to protect beneficial microorganisms. Crops such as potatoes, onions and garlic are grown using mulching, where dry straw is spread over the soil. The mulch conserves moisture, suppresses weeds and gradually decomposes into organic matter.

He has also planted trees around the farm to create buffer zones that reduce the risk of pesticide drift from neighbouring fields. For pest management, he prepares natural sprays using boiled neem leaves instead of chemical pesticides.

While expanding his farm, Jarnail realised that many natural farmers struggled to find reliable markets for their produce. To bridge this gap, he created Organic Gold, a platform under the Society of Organic Natural Agriculturists (SONA).

Using his background in technology, he developed an application that connects organic farmers directly with consumers. The platform allows farmers to sell chemical-free products at fair prices while giving buyers access to trusted natural food.

Today, the initiative includes vegetables, wheat, pulses, jaggery, sugar and homemade pickles. Products are packaged and supplied through direct orders, while fresh produce is also sold every week at the Kisan Mandi held at the Verka plant in Ludhiana.

Managing Farming Alongside Police Duty

Balancing police service with farming requires careful planning. Jarnail has built a dedicated team that manages day-to-day farm operations, including cultivation, harvesting and marketing.

He continues to improve his knowledge by attending agricultural training programmes, farmer fairs and university workshops. His farm has also become a learning centre where PAU students and farmers visit to understand natural farming practices and sustainable production methods.

Inspiring a Shift Towards Healthy Farming

Jarnail believes that reducing chemical use in agriculture is essential for protecting both human health and the environment. He encourages consumers to choose naturally grown food whenever possible and advises washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consumption.

His Organic Gold initiative demonstrates that natural farming can become a profitable business when combined with scientific knowledge, efficient marketing and direct links between farmers and consumers. By integrating sustainable production with modern technology, Jarnail Singh has created a model that is encouraging more farmers in Punjab to explore chemical-free agriculture.
