Four New Potato Varieties Open Options for Indian Farmers

India’s potato farmers now have four new varieties developed by the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute, Shimla. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare has notified Kufri Ratan, Kufri Tejas, Kufri Chipbharat-1 and Kufri Chipbharat-2 for seed production and multiplication across the country.

The varieties target different needs. Two are table potatoes, while two are meant mainly for chip processing. Their maturity periods range from 90 to 100 days, giving farmers options based on local growing conditions and the market they want to serve.

Two varieties are meant for table potatoes

Kufri Ratan matures in about 90 days and has a reported yield potential of 37–39 tonnes per hectare. It has red skin, good storage properties and is recommended for the north Indian plains and plateau regions.

Kufri Tejas also matures in around 90 days and has a reported yield potential of 37–40 tonnes per hectare. It is heat tolerant and has been recommended for plains in Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra.

The heat tolerance of Kufri Tejas could be useful in regions where rising temperatures can affect potato production. Potato is sensitive to high temperatures, particularly during tuber formation, making suitable varieties important for farmers dealing with warmer growing conditions.

Two varieties target the chips market

Kufri Chipbharat-1 has a maturity period of about 100 days and a reported yield potential of 35–38 tonnes per hectare. It contains 21% dry matter and has low reducing sugars, traits that make it suitable for chip processing.

Kufri Chipbharat-2 matures earlier, in about 90 days, with a reported yield potential of 35–37 tonnes per hectare. It also has high dry matter and good storage properties.

The development of processing varieties is relevant as potato demand increasingly extends beyond fresh consumption. Farmers growing varieties suited to processors can potentially target buyers looking for specific quality characteristics rather than relying only on the fresh potato market.

Farmers need the right variety for the right market

The new varieties do not mean every farmer should switch immediately. Variety selection depends on location, soil, irrigation, temperature, seed availability and the market available to the farmer.

ICAR-CPRI’s notification gives farmers and seed producers more choices, but local agricultural recommendations remain important. Farmers need access to quality planting material and information on which varieties perform well under their specific conditions.

The new varieties also show how potato breeding is moving beyond yield alone. Kufri Tejas focuses on heat tolerance, while the two Chipbharat varieties address processing requirements. Kufri Ratan combines yield potential with storage characteristics.

For potato growers, the main opportunity lies in matching the variety with the farm and the buyer. A table potato and a processing potato may require different marketing arrangements, even when both are grown as the same crop.

The four newly notified varieties give farmers more choices for that decision. Their real value will depend on seed availability, field performance and whether farmers can connect with markets that pay for the qualities these varieties were developed to provide.
