Samman 2024 : Ram Murti Mishra’s approach to organic farming and innovation for farmers

0

Ram Murti Mishra, an experienced and respected farmer from Basti district of Uttar Pradesh, is known for adopting several innovations in the field of organic farming and educating farmers about better agricultural practices. He has not only increased the productivity of his farms through organic farming but has also provided guidance to farmers around him in this direction. Based on his experiences and views, this article presents his agricultural journey and his innovations in detail.

Use of raw cow dung: A warning

Ram Murti Mishra always advises his fellow farmers to never put raw cow dung in their fields. According to him, putting raw cow dung in the fields can lead to an infestation of pests like termites and kurmva, which damage the crops and eat their roots. This results in not only a decrease in crop yield but also affects the fertility of the land.

He has also told the farmers that adding raw cow dung can spoil the structure of the land, making farming conditions more difficult. Instead, he informed the farmers about the right use of cow dung, such as using it to make compost manure. This process gives the benefits of cow dung, and also maintains the fertility of the land.

Importance of Animal Husbandry and Grass

Ram Murti Mishra believes that animal husbandry is an important part of agriculture, and he has advised the farmers to grow grass in their fields. According to him, planting Matier grass (organic grass) in the fields has two major benefits. First, it prevents soil erosion. When rainwater comes in large quantities in the settlement, this water can cause erosion of the fields. The roots of the grass slow down the movement of water and help prevent soil erosion.

Second, this grass also provides fodder for the animals. Ram ji suggested that farmers should plant grass in their fields so that they do not have a shortage of fodder even when their fields are dry. This is especially beneficial when the weather changes and the farmer’s crops are not ready. This way, they can feed their animals using grass.

Land improvement and water conservation measures

Ram Murti Mishra has also taken several measures for water conservation and land improvement in his farming. He advised farmers to plant trees and grass on the boundaries of the fields to prevent soil erosion. Apart from this, he also told that structures should be built to store the rainwater collected in the fields at one place. This increases the availability of water and it can be used during the dry season.

Ram ji used a technique called “Richar Vipit” for water conservation, by which rainwater is controlled and allowed to soak into the land. This technique helps farmers in storing and distributing water, which increases the productivity of the land.

Reuse of straw

Ram Murti Mishra has also developed an innovative method for the use of straw. He used the straw as mulching and put the remaining part into Burmese compost. Burmese compost is an organic fertilizer, which increases the fertility of the soil. Apart from this, instead of burning the straw, they use it as manure, which does not harm the environment and also improves the soil structure.

He told that burning the straw causes air pollution and also affects the fertility of the fields. Instead, they use the straw to make compost, which proves beneficial for the crops.

Insecticides and organic treatment

Ram Murti Mishra believes that the use of chemical pesticides is harmful not only for farming but also for health. He never used chemical pesticides in his fields and also advised farmers to use organic pesticides. For example, they use organic treatments like Panchagavya and Panchamrit in their fields, which not only protect the plants from pests but also help in their growth.

Ram ji also told the farmers that they can get better production by following natural methods in their crops. The use of organic pesticides also protects the environment and also has a positive impact on health.

Benefits of government schemes

Ram Murti Mishra has also taken advantage of government schemes and informed the farmers about these schemes. He told that he used schemes like “Farm Machinery Bank”, under which he got assistance in purchasing agricultural equipment. Apart from this, he told the farmers about the “Crop Insurance Scheme”, so that if the crop gets damaged due to weather or other reasons, the farmers can compensate for the loss through insurance.

Ram ji also said that he has received various honors, such as “Innovative Farmer Award” and “Progressive Farmer Award,” which recognize his contribution.

Ram Murti Mishra’s innovations and his approach to organic farming are not only an inspiration for farmers, but it is also an important step towards environmental protection. The suggestions and practices he has adopted set a model for other farmers. His work proves that through organic farming not only crop yield can be increased, but the environment and the economic condition of farmers can also be improved.
