Sunita Devi from Muzaffarpur, Bihar, was struggling to make ends meet just five years ago. She owned only 2 acres of land, had heavy input costs, and was earning less than Rs. 60,000 a year from her crops. Everything changed when she attended a natural farming training camp organized by her local Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Today, her farm earns over Rs. 8 lakh annually, and she trains other women farmers in her village.
Sunita’s turning point came in 2020 when her paddy crop failed due to excessive rainfall. Losses pushed her family into debt. A KVK officer visited her village and introduced the concept of Zero Budget Natural Farming. Sunita was skeptical at first. She had always used chemical fertilizers and pesticides like every other farmer in her area. But with nothing left to lose, she decided to try natural farming on half an acre of her land as an experiment.
Starting with Jeevamrit and Beejamrit
The first thing Sunita learned was how to prepare Jeevamrit — a liquid fertilizer made from cow dung, cow urine, jaggery, besan, and water. She also made Beejamrit to treat her seeds before sowing, which improved germination significantly. These preparations cost almost nothing because she already owned two cows. In the very first season, her vegetables showed stronger growth. The soil smelled different — richer, earthier. She knew something good was happening beneath the surface.
Encouraged by results, Sunita converted all 2 acres to natural farming by the second year. She grew seasonal vegetables, maize, and mustard without buying a single bag of chemical fertilizer. She saved nearly Rs. 18,000 per season on input costs alone. She started selling vegetables directly to a local organic market in Muzaffarpur town, cutting out the middleman completely. Getting 20 to 30% higher prices for organic produce was a game-changer for her family’s finances.
Adding Value Through Processing
Sunita did not stop at growing crops. She learned to make pickles, dried vegetables, and chutneys from surplus produce and started selling them at local haats and through WhatsApp groups. Her mustard oil, cold-pressed using a small wooden ghani she borrowed from a neighbour, sold out every week. Value addition turned perishable produce into storable products with much higher profit margins. This simple idea doubled the effective income from the same 2 acres of farmland.
By 2023, Sunita’s story reached the district agriculture department. She received the State-level Krishi Karman award for progressive organic farming. She was invited to speak at a farming conference in Patna. More importantly, she formed a 15-member women’s Self-Help Group and trained each member in natural farming and organic product preparation. Her group now collectively earns over Rs. 40 lakh a year, lifting fifteen families out of agricultural debt and poverty.
Lessons Every Farmer Can Learn
Sunita’s journey teaches three powerful lessons. First, natural farming is not just for rich or educated farmers — anyone with dedication and a cow can start it. Second, selling directly to consumers and adding value to produce dramatically increases income without requiring more land. Third, joining or forming a group multiplies every farmer’s reach, bargaining power, and market access. Sunita started with nothing but two acres and courage. That combination proved to be more than enough.
