Pioneer of organic farming and the symbol of a new revolution in Bihar’s agriculture sector is Farmer Vijay Giri
Bihar’s agriculture sector: Vijay Giri, a resident of Harpur village in West Champaran district of Bihar, has achieved significant achievements in the field of organic farming. Born on 1 January 1955, Vijay Giri has completely dedicated his life to the promotion of agriculture and organic farming. Giri, who cultivates about 6-10 acres of land, cultivates paddy, Ambe Mahor, Magic rice, coloured paddy and wheat in his fields, and all of these are grown organically.
Vijay Giri’s contribution to organic farming
Vijay Giri believes that organic farming not only helps in maintaining the fertility of the land but the crops produced from it are also healthier. He explains, “The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides damages the quality of the soil in the long run. Through organic farming, we protect our environment and also ensure clean and healthy food for the future generation.”
In his fields, he uses only organic manures, such as cow dung manure, vermicompost, and organic pesticides. His farming technique includes modern organic techniques along with traditional methods. One of the reasons for his biggest success is the diversity in his farming, which includes different varieties of paddy such as Ambe Mahor, Magic Rice and Colourful Paddy. Their specialty is that these varieties are more nutritious and are in great demand in the market.
Promoting organic farming
Vijay Giri not only practices organic farming in his fields, but is also promoting this method among other farmers. He tells other farmers of his village the benefits of organic farming and motivates them to adopt this method. He says, “Adopting organic farming not only reduces the production cost, but also gives higher market value of the product. This improves the income of farmers.”
Need for government support and schemes
Vijay Giri has not been able to avail the benefits of any government scheme in his efforts in the field of organic farming so far. However, he expects the government to come up with some schemes to promote organic farming, which can provide grants and training to farmers. Both the Bihar government and the Government of India have schemes to promote organic farming, such as the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Yojana, but due to lack of awareness, many farmers are deprived of these schemes. If farmers like Vijay Giri can get such government grants and training, it can expand organic farming even faster.
Special Honors and Awards
Vijay Giri has been honored by various government and private institutions for his excellent work. He has received many awards from the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of AYUSH Government of India, Industry Minister and Agriculture Secretary of Bihar Government. These honors are a symbol of appreciation of the contribution made by him in the agriculture sector.
He says, “These honors are a source of inspiration for me and give me confidence that I am working in the right direction. I want more farmers like me to turn to organic farming and together we turn it into a movement.”
Future plans
Vijay Giri now wants to expand his work even further. His dream is to involve more and more farmers in the field of organic farming and create new employment opportunities in this field. For this, he is planning to form a community organic farming group, which will promote branding and marketing of organic products. He believes that if farmers get fair prices in the market, they can be increasingly motivated towards organic farming.
Vijay says, “Only good market access and high quality of the product can increase the income of farmers. I want our organic products to reach every part of the country.”
This story of Vijay Giri is a source of inspiration for farmers not only in Bihar but the entire country. By adopting organic farming in his life and making it successful, he has proved that if efforts are made in the right direction, not only the income of farmers can increase but the environment can also be protected. With government schemes and the right support, organic farming can be taken to new heights, and farmers like Vijay Giri can be the pioneers of this change.
