Unnikrishnan Vadakkumchery, who lives in Kaiparambu village in Thrissur district of Kerala, has given a new identity to agriculture with new techniques and eco-friendly practices. Born in 1965, Unnikrishnan started precision farming through new techniques since 2011. His hard work and innovation made him a successful farmer, who is today decorated with many awards and honors.

Farming innovation: Precision farming and its method

The main basis of Unnikrishnan’s farming is eco-friendly precision farming. He adopts the following steps in his farming:

1. Soil testing and pH value balancing

Before starting farming, the soil is tested and the pH value is balanced. After this, 200 kg of organic manure is added per cent (about 435 square feet).

2. Disease prevention measures
A biological fungus called Trichoderma is used to prevent root-borne diseases.

3. Use of mulching sheets
A 30-micron mulching sheet is used, which retains soil moisture and prevents weed growth.

4. Improved seeds and plants
Improved varieties of seeds and plants are used for crops like tomato, brinjal and chilli.

5. Balanced nutrition
NPK, micronutrients and other essential nutrients in ionic form are given to increase the disease resistance of the plants.

6. Three seasons, six crops
Unnikrishnan has divided 2.5 acres of land into two parts. One part is filled with 8-10 types of crops and the other part is ready in the next 50-60 days. In this way, six crops are grown every year.

Production and profit

Unnikrishnan’s farms produce 60-65 tonnes of premium quality fruits and vegetables every year. These crops have an extremely attractive colour, size, taste and shelf life, which fetches them a good price in the market.

He says:

“Giving the right nutrients at the right time keeps the plants healthy and reduces pest infestation.”

Inspiration for farmers

Unnikrishnan shares his experiences with farmers in his village and nearby areas. His methods and techniques have become an inspiration for other farmers. He says:

“Our aim is not only to increase production but also to preserve the environment.”

Honours and achievements

Unnikrishnan’s innovation and hard work have been appreciated at various platforms. He has received the following major honours:

1. 2022: Outstanding Farmer Award by Agricultural Technology Management Agency, Thrissur.

2. 2021: National Food Hero Award, Delhi.

3. 2020: Innovative Farmer Award by IARI, Delhi.

4. 2016-17: Best Farmer Award of Thrissur District by Kerala State Department of Agriculture.

5. 2016: Best Organic Farmer Award by Kaiparambu Gram Panchayat.

Benefiting from Government Schemes

Unnikrishnan took full advantage of the schemes provided by the government. He received financial assistance from the state government for paddy, vegetables and other crops.

He says:

“The government schemes not only helped us financially but also increased our technical efficiency.”

Prospects and Future Plans

Unnikrishnan aims to spread his precision farming methods across Kerala and across the country. He wants more and more farmers to adopt this technique and increase their income.

He says:

“My dream is that every farmer should do his farming with modern techniques and eco-friendly methods. This will not only increase their income but will also protect the environment.”

Farming Experiences: Interaction with Farmers

Q: Why did you start Precision Farming?

Unnikrishnan: “Chemical farming was reducing soil fertility. I wanted my farming to be beneficial for the environment and give better production.”

Q: What was your biggest challenge?

Unnikrishnan: “Initially it was difficult to convince farmers. But as the results started showing, people started adopting this method themselves.”

Q: Has Precision Farming improved your income?

Unnikrishnan: “Yes, it has improved my income a lot. Also, this method is sustainable in the long run.”

Source of inspiration

Unnikrishnan Vadakkumchery’s story proves that with the right technology and thinking, any farmer can not only increase his income but also contribute to environmental conservation. His journey is an inspiration for other farmers and shows how innovations like precision farming can take Indian agriculture to new heights.
